A family from Moira, the McDowells, lost their teenage daughter Carole to leukaemia in 1963. |
The McDowells then set up the charity (NI Leukaemia Research Fund) and since 1964 we have been raising money to support local researchers and the science behind helping improve treatments and outcomes for blood cancer patients in NI. |
For the next 50 years the Fund, run entirely by volunteers, worked tirelessly to fund leukaemia research taking place in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast City Hospital and Queen’s University. |
In 2014 the decision was taken to re-brand as Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI in recognition of the fact that the charity was now funding research into leukaemia and lymphoma. |
Today LLNI funds research to many different types of blood cancers and related conditions such as myeloma, myeloproliferative neoplasms and myelodysplastic syndromes. Today our aim at LLNI is to improve survival rates and quality of life for all blood cancer patients by supporting clinicians, scientists and students researching these diseases. |
We celebrated 60 years of LLNI with our Diamond Gala Ball - and are delighted to have raised over £100,000!
