Obituaries

The leukaemia research and clinical community have been saddened by the reports of two deaths, in December 2013, of major contributors to the scientific research and clinical treatment of leukaemia, in particular chronic myeloid leukaemia. 

Professor John Goldman died on 24th December 2013.   Professor Goldman made a huge national and international contribution to the science and treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia, and haematology in general, during a career spanning over 40 years mainly based at the Hammersmith Hospital in London.

Professor Janet Rowley, University of Chicago, died on 17th December 2013.  Professor Rowley was an internationally recognised cytogeneticist and scientist whose pioneering studies identified, in the 1970’s,  the first cancer related chromosomal abnormality – the “Philadelphia chromosome” – which is associated with chronic myeloid leukaemia.    Professor Rowley published over 500 scientific articles on her research in leukaemia and cancer.
