Northern Ireland’s Blood Cancer Charity surpasses a significant milestone

Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI is marking it’s 60th Anniversary in 2024.

It was founded by the McDowell family in 1964 following the death of their daughter Carole.  In an effort to prevent other families suffering this loss, the McDowell’s started fundraising for blood cancer research and the Northern Ireland Leukaemia Research Fund (NILRF) was born.

The charity is the McDowell family legacy, their determination to do something for others when faced with terrible circumstances still drives much of the work we do today.

For the next 50 years the Fund, run entirely by volunteers, worked tirelessly to fund leukaemia research taking place in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast City Hospital and Queen’s University.

In 2014 the decision was taken to re-brand as Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI in recognition of the fact that the charity was now funding research into leukaemia and lymphoma. Today the charity funds research in to many different types of blood cancers and related conditions such as myeloma, myeloproliferative neoplasms and myelodysplastic syndromes.

Today LLNI’s aim is to improve survival rates and quality of life for all blood cancer patients by supporting clinicians, scientists and students researching these diseases.
