Gap Fund

We want to help researchers build on findings/data from PhD or fundamental science research projects, and carry out additional testing, research or experiments to enable the translation of scientific discoveries into practical applications for improved patient care.

We hope this investment will be the first step to take scientific learning out of the lab and move it closer to clinical testing and patient benefit.

This fund is open to researchers in any academic institution in Northern Ireland or any clinical researcher within the HSC in Northern Ireland.

Funding award: Up to £30,000

1. Review and submit the Guidelines & Triage Application Form.
2. Two deadlines per year – 14th May 2026 & 6th November 2026.
3. Triage assessed by Scientific & Medical Advisory Committee.
4. Shortlisted proposals offered 4 weeks to submit full application.
5. 2 external assessments: Peer Review & SMAC Meeting
6. Application assesssed by Board of Trustees.
7. Applicants advised of decision within 3 months of full proposal deadline.
