Golden Anniversary Research Programme

Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI has announced the two grants within the Golden Anniversary Research Programme.  This research programme is a £500,000 investment to support research into leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other related disorders; making it the largest single investment the charity has made into blood cancer research.

Myeloma research will benefit from the first award which has been given to Dr Sandra Irvine and Dr Lisa Crawford (pictured) in Queen’s University Belfast .   The grant, part of the overall £500,000 research package will fund a Ph.D. studentship for three years from October 2014.  The research will focus on inhibitors for a group of proteins call TRIM E3 ligases which could be developed as novel therapies.

The second grant has been awarded to Dr Alex Thompson and Professor Ken Mills in the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology (CCRCB). The research studentship will be focused on understanding the role of mutations of the cohesin gene family in Acute Myeloid Leukaemia with the aim of developing inhibitors that can be translated into the clinic. This is the “Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI / Victoria Montgomery” grant, named in the memory of the late wife (pictured) of David Montgomery who with the help of family and friends has raised over £80,000 in the last year.
